Live (once more) from Hochstein! 29 of April, 2020, 12-1pm ET

What with live concerts suspended due to the Coronavirus situation, Rochester’s “Live at Hochstein” series is in a holding pattern, so to keep things going, they have chosen to re-broadcast concerts, including part of our concert there in October, 2019. Thanks so much to Radio WXXI in Rochester, and Mona Seghatoleslami, the fantastic host, who also interviewed us.

The link to Radio "WXXI Rochester and the broadcast is here. Look for the “Classical 91.5” arrow near the upper left corner of the screen.

Between noon and one pm on Wednesday, April 29th, the regular concert hour, our longest work from the program, Sören Sieg’s “Inside Kampala” will be aired. As we were busy performing the first time, we are looking forward to hearing it again !

The piece is in three movements: “Boda-Boda” (which means rickshaw), a wild ride, indeed; “Beautiful”, which lives up to its name; and “Too Hot!”, full of spicy, jazzy moves. The work was commissioned for Syrinx : XXII and premiered in 2018 in the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Bombay, India.

Expect…the unexpected!

MARK THE DATE: Syrinx : XXII at the Museu Oriente in Lisbon!

On Saturday, November 30th, Syrinx : XXII will be presented at the beautiful Museu do Oriente in Lisbon in a recital featuring two works commissioned by the group and a beautiful adaptation of the Mozart “Kegelstatt” Trio.

The first work on the one-hour program, “7 Instantes” by the incomparable Portuguese composer Carlos Marecos, evokes seven rural villages in Portugal, and creates a magical atmosphere as only Carlos knows how to do.

Mozart’s work is a late masterpiece, intimate and joyful—come hear our adaptation!

The final work is “Inside Kampala” by the German composer Sören Sieg. In three movements, it depicts aspects of life in the capital of Uganda in the most colourful and masterly way—like the Marecos, it has been a “hit” on our tours to India, and in performances on the East Coast of the U. S.

Admission is only 10€, and discounts apply. Hope to see you there!

Upcoming Concert 28 of April #2 - Lisbon!

On the same Sunday, April 28th, a few hours earlier, both António Carrilho and Katharine Rawdon of Syrinx : XXII will be performing as well: a concert version of Purcell’s famous semi-opera “The Fairy Queen”, based on Shakespeare’s play “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. This will be a major concert in the Belém Cultural Center’s “Music Days” Festival, taking place in the Grand Auditorium, and featuring world-class singers and António’s early-music ensemble “Le Paix du Parnasse”, based in Spain.

Temporarily abandoning his recorders, António will conduct the performance, after arranging it for the ensemble and the conditions of the hall and Festival. Hardly a novice at conducting, the performance promises to be a sonic delight, featuring some of Purcell’s most beautiful music.

The concert will be at 3pm, and purchasing tickets—which allow entrance into the Center where there will be pop-up shops of scores, CDs and such, as well as free concerts in the open spaces—is advised, as the concert is very likely to sell out.

Not counting the “Tale of Two Cities” — Paris and Lisbon — Syrinx : XXII will have a busy weekend coming up; hope to see you in one venue or the other!

Upcoming Concert 28 of April #1 - Paris!

The wonderful pianist of Syrinx : XXII, Raj Bhimani, will be presenting his annual Paris recital on the 28th of April at the American Church. As always, this promises to be a beautiful moment of piano solo repertoire, with works by Beethoven, Brahms, Thérèse Brenet and Henri Dutilleux—Raj being a particular specialist in the works of the latter two composers, important figures in French 20th Century music.

The American Church boasts a beautifully restored Steinway piano and lovely acoustics. The concert will be at 5 pm, and usually fills the hall so arrive a bit early!

We wish him “a broken leg” for the performance and an excellent glass of champagne afterwards!

Alas, António and Katharine have a concert the same afternoon in Lisbon, otherwise we’d be packing our bags for a hop to Paris, you bet!
